The height of overpopulation, debt, and pollution was detrimental to the year of 2040. Consequently, two newly elected officials of the Prime, Dr. Carolyn Elster and the Archon Adam Kringle, initiated a new order called the Thinning. It is a selection process in which certain groups are filtered from the population. The process sparked controversy due to the discriminatory measures required to target and remove the unwanted. These groups, collectively dubbed the Sordidus, included people of addiction, disability, poverty, and poor health. They and any others that took advantage of the system while contributing little to it were considered a waste of space and resources, and were thus exiled. Survivors of the process were dubbed the Consummatus. They are the Prime's vision: Self-sufficient individuals that would "improve" the quality and productivity of the New Nation. Molli was born into the Consummatus, and this is the only life she has ever known, yet she yearns to discover who is beyond the gates of the New Nation. She is willing to take that risk, even if it means being exiled as a Sordidum herself.
